Apple iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 12: What are the big differences?
Reading Time: 4 minutes

The iPhone 13 was unveiled at Apple’s California Streaming event, and it appears to be a fantastic smartphone, as we’ve grown to expect from Apple. A stunning design, a long-lasting battery, and one of the greatest smartphone camera systems in the world combine with top-tier computing capability. The iPhone 13 appears to be on track to become the year’s must-have smartphone.

But that’s all we had to say about the iPhone 12 (and probably did). The iPhone from last year is still a beauty, with plenty of processing power, a long battery life, and a fantastic camera. You’d be forgiven for believing these are the same phone at first glance. There are differences, but you’re undoubtedly curious if they’re significant enough to justify purchasing the new iPhone over the older one. Is it worth upgrading to the iPhone 13 if you currently have an iPhone 12?

Specs

  • Magsafe
  • 5G
  • Fast Wired Charging (20W)
  • Qi Wireless Charging (15W)

Design, display, and durability

In terms of design, your first impression is correct: these two phones have relatively little design variations. The only notable differences between the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 12 are the slightly narrower notch on the iPhone 13 and the updated configuration of the camera lenses, and that’s the only one you’ll see when the two phones are side by side. Aside from that, they’re nearly identical, with flat, iPhone 5-like sides, a beautiful 6.1-inch Super Retina OLED display, and an aluminum body.

The same may be said for durability. Both have Ceramic Shield glass and an IP68 dust and water resistance rating. Aside from minor variations, these two versions are virtually identical.

Performance, battery life, and charging

So, while the two phones appear to be very identical on the outside, this is not the case when we open them up and examine the gleaming components inside. The A14 Bionic processor on the iPhone 12 isn’t bad, but the A15 Bionic chip is faster and more powerful. Apple has also increased the iPhone 13’s RAM to 6GB and, probably most importantly, removed the option for 64GB of storage. That means the iPhone 13’s storage options start at 128GB and now include a 512GB model, which is great news for media addicts and app downloaders of all stripes.

Both phones have the same charging capabilities, including 20W rapid wired charging and MagSafe wireless charging. However, the iPhone 13 has a distinct advantage in this regard. While we’ll have to wait for teardowns to confirm how much larger the iPhone 13’s battery is, it appears likely that the iPhone 13 will have an even longer battery life than the iPhone 12’s all-day battery life.

It boasts a powerful processor, greater RAM, more storage options, and a battery that may last longer. For the newest iPhone, it’s a slam dunk.

Cameras

There haven’t been any significant differences in terms of specs between the two phones, and that’s for good reason. The dual-lens 12MP arrangement on the iPhone 12 is fantastic and produces beautiful images. So, in order to maintain the iPhone 13’s quality, Apple didn’t need to make any hardware changes. Sure, an extra lens would have been nice, but we’ll have to wait until next year’s iPhone to see that.

However, the software has undergone more significant alterations. The iPhone 13’s new A15 chipset powers a slew of new and intriguing features, including a new Cinematic Mode that lets you capture Hollywood-style videos and a variety of new Photographic Styles. It’s a minor adjustment, but we’ll give it to the iPhone 13 on these.

Updates and software

iOS 14 is installed on the iPhone 12, while iOS 15 will be installed on the iPhone 13. Does this imply that the iPhone 13 is the winner? Certainly not. The iPhone 12 will receive an upgrade to iOS 15 on the day the new operating system is released, and because of Apple’s great upgrade track record, it will be supported for a long time. The iPhone 6S, for example, was released in 2015 and will be updated to iOS 15 when the new version is released. So far, the support has lasted six years, with no end in sight. You may rest comfortable that no matter which iPhone you purchase, you will receive upgrades for a long time. As a result, this round is a strong tie.

Special features

Apple isn’t known for cramming extra functionality onto its phones, and it’s certainly not Samsung. Regardless, both of these phones come with more than enough unique features to get by. Both are 5G compatible, allowing users to access the next generation of ultra-fast mobile services. You’ll also find Apple’s fascinating augmented reality capabilities, like as Memoji and Animoji, as well as Siri, Apple’s personal assistant. There isn’t much separating the two, so this is another tie.

Cost and the availability

The Apple iPhone 13 will be available for pre-order on September 17 and will arrive on September 24. It will be available on almost all wireless carriers. The iPhone 12, which is presently available for purchase, is in the same boat. The iPhone 13 will be available for $799, while the iPhone 12 will be available for $699.

Overall winner: iPhone 13

It’s easy to see why the iPhone 13 won this competition. With a powerful processor, larger battery, more adept camera software, and even more storage, Apple’s newest iPhone is a clear winner. Although the differences aren’t significant, if you’re in the market for a new iPhone, go for the iPhone 13 over the iPhone 12. It’ll cost you an extra $100, but you’ll get double the storage and a faster processor, so it’s well worth it.

Already have an iPhone 12 and want to know if upgrading to the iPhone 13 is worth it? This time, we’d advise you to hold your fire. With the iPhone 13, Apple hasn’t made any significant changes to the iPhone formula, and most of what the iPhone 13 can do, your existing iPhone can accomplish as well. The iPhone 12’s camera is still fantastic, and the faster processor isn’t a significant enough reason to upgrade. Instead, wait until next year to see what the iPhone 2022 has in store
