Mercedes-Benz has shown the version of the Electric G-Wagen Concept, a boxy luxury off-roader with illuminating highlights and truly moon rover-style wheels.

Mercedes-Benz kept the official name of the electric SUV, the Concept EQG, under wraps while showcasing it at the 2021 IAA Mobility show in Munich. It made no indication of range estimations, battery size, or the electric motors’ power output. It will, however, be all-wheel drive and have low and high gear. Those wheels are also 22 inches in diameter.

Instead, the Concept EQG is more of a design exercise right now, a first look at how Mercedes-Benz might adapt the new G-Class, which was initially exhibited at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, and something to admire until a production version arrives.

However, it’s a striking first attempt. Mercedes-Benz employed the same two-tone paint scheme on the first versions of its electrified EQS sedan on the EQG. The lighted grille that the business has been experimenting with on previous ideas and production vehicles finally fits in.

When a production EQG arrives, it will join a growing group of electric vehicles capable of traversing tough terrain. GM has resurrected the Hummer name and is now producing two all-electric models: an SUV and a pickup truck. Rivian, an electric vehicle startup, is preparing to release its first pickup truck, with an SUV following later this year. Ford has even hinted that an all-electric version of the recently resurrected Bronco SUV may be released in the future.

The G-Wagen has always been as much about being a status symbol as it has been about going off-road, so anticipate the production EQG to be packed with all of the same features that Mercedes-Benz has been introducing in its newest, most costly vehicles, such as the EQS sedan. If Mercedes-Benz can deliver the EQG the same range and performance as its EQS and EQE sedans on the company’s new electric vehicle platform, the electric G-Wagen may be spectacular.
