TDLR:
- MTN Ghana has been awarded new 5G spectrum by the NCA, covering the 700 MHz and 3 GHz bands for US$202 million over 15 years. It is a big step, but 5G has not launched, and MTN has not shared dates, locations or pricing.
- MTN Ghana has won new 5G spectrum. On 2 October, the company announced that the National Communications Authority (NCA) had notified it of the award.
- Before you rush out for a new phone, let me explain what this actually means.
Think of the network like a road
Spectrum is the invisible airwaves that carry your calls and data. Picture it as lanes on a road. The more lanes you have, the more cars get through without traffic. MTN just got more lanes.
What did MTN get?
Two bands. The 700 MHz band travels far and pushes through walls, which makes it a good fit for villages, towns and the inside of buildings. The 3 GHz band carries a lot of data, so it suits busy cities where many people are online at once.
MTN will pay US$202 million for both, and the licences run for 15 years.
What does this mean for you as a Ghanaian?
If everything goes well, you could see faster downloads and uploads, smoother video calls and a better network at busy times. There is also home internet without fibre. MTN says it plans to use the spectrum for home broadband too.
What it does not mean
5G is not here yet. MTN is still completing the paperwork and payments, and the rollout starts after the licences are issued.
MTN has not told us when 5G will launch, which areas will get it first, or how much 5G data will cost.
Spectrum alone will not fix a bad network either. MTN still has to build towers, lay fibre and keep the power on. And you need a 5G phone to use 5G. If your phone is older, you stay on 4G.
My take
As a creator, the internet is my office. When it fails, my work stops.
I am happy about this news, because faster uploads and stress-free live videos would change a lot for creators like me. But I have heard big network promises before, so I am not celebrating yet.
MTN has the spectrum. Now let us see the delivery.
A 5G announcement is not the same as 5G on your phone. I will believe it when I see the 5G sign on my screen, with fast speeds and a fair price.
What you should do now
- Follow MTN’s official pages and us for updates.
- If you are buying a phone soon, pick one with 5G.
- Do not rush to spend money because of this news. Wait for the launch details.
No launch date yet, so keep an eye on MTN’s official channels for the rollout announcement.
