How To Restore Your iPhone From iOS 15 Beta Back To iOS 14

While beta versions of new software are fun to check out, you may find that they aren’t suitable for everyday use. If you’ve upgraded your iPhone to the iOS 15 beta, which is now available to the general public, and then decide you need to return to iOS 14.6, you can do so.

The most straightforward approach to return to a stable version is to erase the iOS 15 beta profile and wait for the next update:

1 Navigate to “Settings” > “General.”

2 Select ā€œProfiles and Device Managementā€ from the drop-down menu.

3 Restart your iPhone after selecting “Remove Profile.”

You won’t be able to switch back to a non-beta version of iOS until a new update is released. (Go to “Settings” > “General” > “Software Update” to see if one is available.) You can do a more comprehensive recovery if you don’t want to wait – it’ll be more difficult, but it’ll get you back to where you were faster.

The first thing you must do is enter Recovery Mode on your iPhone. This is accomplished by connecting your iPhone to your computer (after ensuring that it is up to date). These instructions were tested on a MacBook Pro, but they should also work on a PC.

Then you should do the following (the three bulleted directions below are taken directly from Apple’s support page):

1 Press and swiftly release the Volume Up button on an iPhone 8 or later. Quickly press and release the Volume Down button. Then, hold down the Side button until the recovery mode screen appears.

2 If you have an iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, or iPod touch (7th generation), follow these steps: At the same moment, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Volume Down buttons. When you see the Apple logo, don’t let go of the buttons. Hold both buttons down until the recovery mode screen appears.

3 If you have an iPhone 6s or older, an iPad with a Home button, or an iPod touch (6th generation or older), follow these steps: At the same moment, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons. When you see the Apple logo, don’t let go of the buttons. Hold both buttons down until the recovery mode screen appears.

Following the preceding steps, you should see a sign on your iPhone depicting a cable connecting to a computer, regardless of the iPhone you have. Your focus should now be on your computer.

1 A message will appear asking if you wish to update, restore, or cancel your account. Choose “Restore.”

2 You’ll be asked if you’re sure you want to restore your phone because you’ll be wiping out all of your customizations and restoring it to factory settings. Choose “Restore and Update” from the drop-down menu.

3 You’ll be informed that you’ll be upgraded to iOS 14.6. (which is the most recent version of iOS 14). “Next” should be selected.

4 You’ll be asked to agree to all of the various license data that you accepted to the last time you used your iPhone at this point. Select “Agree” from the drop-down menu.

5 You’ll then be informed that your computer is downloading iPhone software. Depending on your machine and network, it should take a while, perhaps 15 minutes or so.

6 You’ll be notified that the OS is being installed on your phone once it has been downloaded (and the phone will visibly begin uploading the software and will probably restart once or twice). You’ll be notified on your computer screen when it’s finished.

Okay, your iPhone should now be running iOS 14.6 again. That’s well and dandy, but now that you’ve got a blank slate, don’t you want to restore all of your apps, personalization, and other settings? This is where you’ll need your backup. (Did you make a backup of your phone before installing the iOS 15 beta?)

1 You’ll be asked if you want to use the settings from another phone to set up your iPhone. If you have another with all of your settings, that’s great ā€” just follow the instructions. However, if you’re planning to restore from a backup, select “Set Up Manually.”

2 This is where you’ll input your Wi-Fi password.

3 Then you may pick whether to restore your backup from iCloud, a Mac or PC, an iPhone, or an Android phone. You also have the option of not transferring any data at all. Assume you’ve backed up your data to iCloud.

4 You’ll be prompted to enter your Apple ID name and password, as well as a verification number emailed to your computer, once you’ve made that decision.

5 If you’ve recently made multiple backups, you’ll be able to choose which one to use. (Hopefully, it won’t be an iOS 15 backup, which won’t be transferrable.)

6 After you’ve selected your backup, it’ll be uploaded to your iPhone, and you’ll be back where you were before installing iOS 15. You should be able to use your iPhone pretty soon, but it may take a few minutes for everything from your backup to be uploaded.
