Steps On How To Set Up VPN On Windows 10

Published

on

Reading Time: 2 minutes

VPN service: Even though you’re using Windows 10 to handle your VPN access, you’ll also need to choose which VPN service to link to. The provider you choose will decide who runs the servers to which you are about to bind.

Protocol selection: During initialization, you will be prompted to choose a protocol from a chart. Simply put, the protocol you choose defines the power of your encryption. VPNs use a variety of protocols, and the VPN you select can use one of them. PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, SSTP, and OpenVPN are the four most popular. During initialization, you’ll say Windows which form of protocol your VPN employs by choosing it from a drop-down menu. Your VPN provider will inform you which one it employs.

Here’s how to use VPN on Windows 10  to set up and link to a VPN:

1. Right-click the Start button on your Windows 10 screen and choose Settings from the menu that emerges.

2. In the new window that appears, pick Network & Internet, then VPN from the list of link choices on the right side of the computer.

3. Select Add a VPN attachment from the drop-down menu.

4. You will be taken to a setup page as a result of this. Click the dropdown menu under VPN provider and pick the Windows choice (built-in).

5. In the Link name area, enter the name you want to assign this connection. Make one that you can quickly identify as a VPN link. If you’re using ExpressVPN and want this link to be the one you use to connect to a New York site, for example, call it “ExpressVPN, New York server.”

6. Enter the real address of the server you’re connected to in the Hostname or address area. These details would be available through your VPN provider. It would generally resemble a website URL, with an alphanumeric string of five or six characters preceded by the name of the VPN provider you’re using.

7. You’ll be prompted to choose a protocol from the VPN style dropdown, as I described above. Choose what one the VPN provider employs.

8. Choose the method for signing in to your current VPN link from the Type of sign-in data dropdown screen. Different VPN providers have different preference approaches, so consult with your VPN provider to be informed, but with the majority of publicly accessible private VPNs, you’ll pick the Username and password.

This ensures that if you choose this new VPN link on your Windows 10 phone, you’ll need to log in using the same username and password you use to access your VPN service on every other computer.

9. Choose the Save option. You’ve now completed the development of your VPN profile, and all that remains is for you to bind to it.

10. Return to your Network & Internet configuration page and, as before, click VPN from the choices on the right-hand side of the computer. In the list, you’ll see your freshly developed VPN link (in our case, “ExpressVPN, New York server”). Select it and press the Connect button.

How To Transcribe WhatsApp Voice Messages On Android!

Published

on

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Have you ever been in a situation where you receive a voice note on WhatsApp but can’t really listen to it? More often than not, they are just too long to find proper time to listen properly.

WhatsApp recently rolled out a feature that allows you to change the playback speed of voice notes. This has been a welcome solution to long voice notes that take up a load of time. Today, we will also take a look at a way to transcribe your voice notes into text, enabling you to read them later or in real-time, provided you use an Android device (sorry iPhone users).

On Android, an app called Transcriber for WhatsApp exists, and this enables you to convert your voice notes to text you can read and reply to, so long as that voice note is in a supported language

How does this fancy app even work? Not to get too technical, but the Transcriber app uses Wit.ai services to generate the text from a voice message. This is a simple overview but that is generally how it operates.

Now, after downloading the app, you just need to open it to configure its settings to use it:

  • Select a voice message in a WhatsApp chat.
  • Tap the Share button.
  • Export the selected voice message to the Transcriber app.
  • Wait a few seconds and the transcription is ready.

In our opinion, this app is a lifesaver in those moments when you simply cannot listen to a voice message. By generating its transcription, you can read it the way you would any other text message.

The privacy policy of the app is available here. Unfortunately, it doesn’t contain so much information but, if you want to learn more, you can consider asking for clarification directly from the developer.

All the best and happy transcribing!

How Secure Is Incognito Mode?

Published

on

Reading Time: 3 minutes

I bet you’ve had that moment when you want to handle something sensitive, embarrassing, or just something PG and you definitely don’t want it in your browser where your roommate, boss, or family members might stumble upon it. Or just a friend wanting to use your browser for some social media or just some internet browsing so you fire up your browser’s trusty incognito or private mode which promises to keep the activity secret from anyone else who uses your computer or phone but is it that trusty? And what exactly does an incognito mode do?

Here’s the basic principle of operation. Incognito mode works by keeping your history the browser cache that contains the contents of pages you visit, cookies that track your activity, and form data that you enter only temporarily. The idea is that once you’re done with your session and you close your browser this information all gets deleted making it invisible to the next person who uses the browser. This makes it not only useful for keeping your browsing habits away from prying eyes but also for getting around website features that might make using them irritating because it doesn’t use cookies from your main browsing session. You can use incognito mode to log into a website under a different account stop advertisers from snooping on what you’re looking at and even get around website paywalls on sites that use cookies to track how many articles you’ve viewed before they start charging you. Newspaper websites are notorious for this last one.

However, you’ve probably seen the warnings that pop up in incognito mode telling you your employer or Internet service provider might still be able to keep tabs on your online activity, how would they do that?
Well because incognito mode only affects what’s being stored locally on your computer, all of that traffic is still being routed through the servers at your ISP and also perhaps your school or office so it can still be intercepted and tracked so that means that if you really want to anonymize your web traffic you’ll need to consider using a VPN as well, possibly over a network like tor to further conceal your identity. Also remember that just because a browser deletes the information about your session doesn’t mean it will keep a determined snoop from finding out what you’ve been up to, for example, features that can run in incognito mode such as browser extensions or Adobe Flash can still leave visible traces on your computer unless you make sure that those are disabled as well and browsers also don’t necessarily delete any data that you built up during an incognito session securely so some of it could still be found with a software recovery program or inside your PC’s DNS cache which matches the URLs of the sites you visit with the IP addresses so you’ll need to make sure that you clear your DNS cache if you’re really worried about privacy. Finally, things that go wrong on your PC can also compromise the effectiveness of incognito mode since many browsers delete the data from your incognito mode session once you close your session, an unexpected error like a computer crash could keep that data from being deleted normally and then, of course, any malware or spying software like a key logger could easily be keeping tabs on your incognito browsing if your PC is infected.

We’re not trying to make you think that private browsing is useless, it’s still a powerful tool and an easy, quick layer of security but just like any tool it only works if you take the appropriate precautions so make sure that your boss isn’t standing over your shoulder while you’re using incognito mode to send out resumes or leaving the tabs open when you attend to something else.

But tell use below, do you use the incognito mode? How often do you do? And what are some of the things you use the incognito mode for?
