Steps On How To Set Up VPN On Windows 10

Reading Time: 2 minutes

VPN service: Even though you’re using Windows 10 to handle your VPN access, you’ll also need to choose which VPN service to link to. The provider you choose will decide who runs the servers to which you are about to bind.

Protocol selection: During initialization, you will be prompted to choose a protocol from a chart. Simply put, the protocol you choose defines the power of your encryption. VPNs use a variety of protocols, and the VPN you select can use one of them. PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, SSTP, and OpenVPN are the four most popular. During initialization, you’ll say Windows which form of protocol your VPN employs by choosing it from a drop-down menu. Your VPN provider will inform you which one it employs.

Here’s how to use VPN on Windows 10  to set up and link to a VPN:

1. Right-click the Start button on your Windows 10 screen and choose Settings from the menu that emerges.

2. In the new window that appears, pick Network & Internet, then VPN from the list of link choices on the right side of the computer.

3. Select Add a VPN attachment from the drop-down menu.

4. You will be taken to a setup page as a result of this. Click the dropdown menu under VPN provider and pick the Windows choice (built-in).

5. In the Link name area, enter the name you want to assign this connection. Make one that you can quickly identify as a VPN link. If you’re using ExpressVPN and want this link to be the one you use to connect to a New York site, for example, call it “ExpressVPN, New York server.”

6. Enter the real address of the server you’re connected to in the Hostname or address area. These details would be available through your VPN provider. It would generally resemble a website URL, with an alphanumeric string of five or six characters preceded by the name of the VPN provider you’re using.

7. You’ll be prompted to choose a protocol from the VPN style dropdown, as I described above. Choose what one the VPN provider employs.

8. Choose the method for signing in to your current VPN link from the Type of sign-in data dropdown screen. Different VPN providers have different preference approaches, so consult with your VPN provider to be informed, but with the majority of publicly accessible private VPNs, you’ll pick the Username and password.

This ensures that if you choose this new VPN link on your Windows 10 phone, you’ll need to log in using the same username and password you use to access your VPN service on every other computer.

9. Choose the Save option. You’ve now completed the development of your VPN profile, and all that remains is for you to bind to it.

10. Return to your Network & Internet configuration page and, as before, click VPN from the choices on the right-hand side of the computer. In the list, you’ll see your freshly developed VPN link (in our case, “ExpressVPN, New York server”). Select it and press the Connect button.
