While there have been alot of rumors of a third-tier iPhone Pro, most recent reports indicate that this is perhaps not as true as previously thought. ‘Reliable sources’ speaking to Mac Otakara say that there will only be two iPhone models; the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus.
According to the report, the ‘iPhone 7 Pro’ was a dual-lens alternative to the iPhone 7 Plus, and the single-lens version was created solely as a fallback. Now that dual-lens technology is working out for the company, Apple will use the ‘Plus’ name for what was previously called the iPhone 7 Pro, and will drop the idea of a Pro model altogether.
Previously, it was thought that there would be three iPhone models: a 4.7-inch model, a 5.5-inch model, and a 4-inch model. Some sources hint that Apple will launch yet another version of the iPhone in 2016. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are more or less guaranteed to replace the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus as the flagships, but rumors hinted that there may be a new iPhone 7 Pro, too.
Still, after several leaks hinted that Apple will release three models of the iPhone 7, noted leaker Evan Blass tweeted on July 19 that there would only be two versions, code-named “Sonora” and “Dos Palos,” after two cities in California.
Several other leaks contradict @evleaks’ tweet with photographic evidence of what unsubstantiated sources claim were the three new iPhone 7 models. Of course, these sources are much less reliable than @evleaks, who has a proven track record of accurate leaks. There are a number of possibilities. If @evleaks is right, the many leaks showing three iPhone 7 versions could be evidence that Apple is experimenting with different variations, but will only launch two in September.
It’s impossible to say who’s right at this point, but below are several leaked images of what the three rumored iPhone 7 models could look like.
