Unfolding the Transformation: Galaxy Z Fold 7 Sheds 48% of Its Thickness!

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Unveiled at Galaxy Unpacked 2025 in New York on July 9, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 sets a new benchmark in foldable smartphone design — now 48% thinner than the original Galaxy Fold. While Samsung reduced overall thickness by 29% across the first six generations (2019–2024), the past year alone brought a dramatic 26% reduction, showcasing the brand’s relentless pursuit of refinement in hinge engineering and industrial design.

Samsung’s foldable journey began in 2019 with the debut of the original Galaxy Fold, which introduced consumers to a revolutionary form factor with a 17.1 mm folded thickness and 7.6 mm unfolded thickness. It delivered a true tablet-like experience that fit in the palm of your hand, ushering in a new era of mobile multitasking.

Each new generation since has pushed boundaries:

  • 2020 – Galaxy Z Fold2 introduced the Hideaway Hinge with 60+ internal components, reducing folded thickness to 16.8 mm and unfolded to 6.9 mm, improving fold smoothness and overall durability.

  • 2022 – Galaxy Z Fold4 replaced the gear-based hinge with a linear movement system, further trimming the body to 15.8 mm (folded) and 6.3 mm (unfolded) while offering better ergonomics.

  • 2023 – Galaxy Z Fold5 debuted the Flex Hinge with a four-shaft mechanism and water-drop fold, minimizing screen crease and eliminating the hinge gap. The result: 13.4 mm folded, 6.1 mm unfolded.

  • 2024 – Galaxy Z Fold6 brought a symmetrical dual-rail hinge design, achieving 12.1 mm folded and 5.6 mm unfolded, with enhanced flexibility for various folding angles between 75° and 115°.

Now in 2025, the Galaxy Z Fold7 is Samsung’s slimmest and most advanced foldable ever:

  • 8.9 mm thick when folded

  • 4.2 mm thick when unfolded

  • Enhanced by the Armor FlexHinge, which integrates advanced materials with optimized structural design for exceptional durability and compactness

It also offers Samsung’s largest foldable display to date:

  • 6.5-inch cover display (up from 6.3″ on Fold6), improving usability while folded

  • 8.0-inch main display, delivering an 11% larger viewing area — ideal for productivity, entertainment, and immersive multitasking

From Concept to Craftsmanship

The Galaxy Z Fold series is not just evolving — it’s redefining what’s possible in mobile design. Samsung’s continued innovations in hinge technology, materials engineering, and user-centered design have transformed the foldable from a novelty into a premium productivity powerhouse.

As foldables continue to slim down and smarten up, the Galaxy Z Fold7 represents more than just a new device — it’s a culmination of six years of progress and a bold step into the future of mobile experiences.
