Amazon Is Ending Evangelion By Bringing The Final Film To Prime Video

Reading Time: 2 minutes

On August 13th, Amazon will release the final installment of the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, which are adaptations of Hideaki Anno’s iconic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.01 Thrice Upon a Time premiered in Japan in March, but Amazon says it will be available in over 240 countries and territories on Prime Video.

Amazon will also broadcast the other films in the series, Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone, Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance, and Evangelion: 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo, in addition to the final fourth film.

The business hasn’t announced when those films would be available on its service, but it’s likely to be in time for the August release of Thrice Upon a Time.

The Evangelion “Rebuilds” are an intriguing combination of updated sequences from the original animation as well as wholly new plot lines and character backstories that are exclusive to the film series. There are a lot of fascinating departures and fully animated Eva battles to find in the Rebuilds if you watched Neon Genesis Evangelion when it first came out on Netflix in 2019.

Plus, for anyone who experienced a mini-existential crisis during the pandemic, the show’s and films’ darker psychological elements will certainly hit too close to home.

Amazon’s acquisition of Thrice Upon a Time and its predecessors appears to be a major setback for Netflix’s anime empire. Most streaming services are now attempting to develop an anime strategy, whether through the acquisition of existing platforms or simply by investing in well-known producers. It’s a shame Netflix didn’t get more Evangelion to go with the series and two original feature films it already has. I suppose Bezos needs more mechs.
