Huawei, Rebecca Foundation begin Coding and Fintech training in rural areas

Huawei Ghana, in conjunction with the Rebecca Foundation, has started a digital technology training program in coding and financial technology (Fintech) for JHS students and women in rural Ghana.

The training is part of a larger effort to improve children’s digital literacy by exposing them to basic coding skills and programming languages such as HTML, Scratch, and C++, as well as economically empowering women in Ghana’s Northern, Western, and Eastern regions to enable them to benefit from digital technologies to improve their livelihoods.

50 traders and 150 Junior High School students from Kurabaso JHS, Jafo JHS, Cathedral JHS, Yabum JHS, Presby JHS, ST. Anne’s JHS, Jakpa JHS, Damongo Girls Model JHS, and Canteen JHS have benefited from the training pilot, which began on November 8, 2021, at Damongo, in the Northern area.

H.E. Mrs. Rebecca Akuffo-Addo, Ghana’s First Lady and founder of the Rebecca Foundation praised Huawei for cooperating with the Rebecca Foundation to teach more girls and women, particularly in digital technologies, to close the gender gap in ICTs, during a brief launch meeting.

She stated that the Foundation is eager to begin activities and projects aimed at the socio-economic development of children and women throughout the country, and that the relationship with Huawei is in keeping with that goal.

Mrs. Jenny Zhou, Huawei Ghana’s Director of Public Relations, stated during the meeting that Huawei is passionate about nurturing more women in technology and will continue to do so in order to positively affect society.

According to her, the initiative coincides with the 10th anniversary of International Girls in ICT Day, as well as Huawei’s Seeds for the Future- Women in Tech program, which aims to encourage girls and young women to pursue careers in technology through training, workshops, career guidance, and mentorship.

The West Gonja Municipality’s Chief Executive, Hon. Karimu Kusubari, praised Huawei Ghana and the Rebecca Foundation for bringing digital technology training to their doorstep and for engaging the district in their efforts.

He urged the pupils to take the program seriously and use what they learned to help other children. He also urged Huawei to expand the training program next year to include more students from the municipality.

Mr. Katribe Dramani, the Director of Education for the West Gonja Municipality, addressed the pupils and challenged them to become ICT ambassadors, ensuring that what they had learned was put to good use.

The training is expected to benefit 400 more women and children from Mpohor in the Western Region and Asamankese in the Eastern Region of Ghana, and to empower students to become future creators of technology by exploring programming and beginning to build on their computational thinking skills as early as kindergarten.

This training is part of Huawei’s promise to Ghana’s President, H.E. Nana Akuffo Addo, to train 10,000 Ghanaians in information and communication technology by 2024.
