Just in: MoMo fraud boys under pressure as MTN, other telcos fires back

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Mobile Money fraud has increased dramatically in recent years, causing inconvenience for MoMo subscribers and embarrassment for MTN Ghana. However, in recent months, the threat has been considerably reduced, with fewer victimhood complaints being made. As it turns out, MTN Ghana and the other local carriers have teamed up to fight the canker and eradicate it completely.

Previously, the MoMo fraudsters only needed to purchase and register a new SIM card to conduct their business. When the carriers insisted on registering all phone numbers, the plan met a hitch. They managed to keep the practice going in some fashion.

However, in a new twist of events that is sure to cripple the average MoMo fraudster, MTN Ghana and other telecom service providers have agreed to keep an eye on each other by blocking the IMEI of any mobile phone linked to fraud — ensuring that such phones can never be used in Ghana again — making Mobile Money fraud an expensive endeavor.

MTN Ghana’s CEO, Selorm Adadevoh, stated this at the company’s Media Forum held at the Labadi Beach Hotel on Friday, August 20th.

While MoMo fraud has decreased substantially, and this new development is likely to further reduce it, we can only totally combat this scourge if people remain attentive and protect themselves from being victims.
