Microsoft intends to combine its OneNote and OneNote for Windows 10 apps into a single OneNote application. The software company is porting all of the features from its UWP OneNote for Windows 10 app to the classic OneNote desktop version.
These enhancements will be rolled out over the next 12 months in a series of updates to the standard OneNote desktop program that comes included with Office. The changes include a cosmetic makeover as well as “important existing functionality that are now exclusive to OneNote for Windows 10.” It’s unclear which features from OneNote for Windows 10 will make the jump to the OneNote desktop app, but Microsoft promises that “all of the most appreciated features will continue to be a part of OneNote.”

In the second half of 2022, users of the dedicated OneNote for Windows 10 app will be asked to upgrade to the full desktop OneNote program. The OneNote team notes, “Advances in Windows and Office will allow us to integrate the two programs so that you may have the convenience of a single OneNote app on Windows while enjoying the interface and functionality you’re currently familiar with.”

While the UWP version of OneNote for Windows 10 will not be killed off immediately, Microsoft does advise OneNote users to migrate to the desktop software by October 2025, when OneNote for Windows 10 will approach the end of service.
Microsoft’s other OneNote programs for macOS, iOS, Android, and the web will not be affected by these changes to OneNote on Windows. It’s just Microsoft combining its several OneNote apps into one that should combine the best of the UWP and desktop worlds.
