Oppo has unveiled the latest iteration of its under-screen camera technology, claiming that it allows a selfie camera to be placed beneath the display “without compromising the integrity of the screen.” Unlike previous approaches, which reduced pixel density in the portion of the screen that covers the camera to allow more light to pass through, Oppo is using smaller pixels to maintain the same 400-pixel density.

According to Oppo, users should notice “nearly no visual difference between the [under-screen camera] area and the rest of the screen during everyday use, creating a much more immersive visual experience.” The company has shown off an image of a prototype phone running an e-reader app, which would be the worst-case scenario for previous under-display cameras due to tangles.
ZTE, on the other hand, has an advantage over Oppo in that it has already shipped a phone, and its newer Axon 30 is claimed to have improved the technology as well. ZTE claims that the camera part of the screen has the same 400-ppi density as the Axon 20, as well as superior camera quality.
Oppo has been working on under-display cameras for a long time, displaying the world’s first prototype at MWC Shanghai in 2019, but it will have to put one in a commercial product at some point. For the time being, it’s difficult to say anything about the technological advancements without first seeing a prototype in person.
