AMD just delivered on a big promise for FidelityFX Super Resolution

Reading Time: 2 minutes

AMD is boosting support for FidelityFX Super Resolution less than a month after its launch (FSR). AMD is also providing support for the upscaling capability in four more titles as well as two game engines to coincide with the release of the source code on the GPUOpen platform.

Over the next two weeks, AMD will roll out support for the four additional games. The first shipment will arrive on July 16th. The first games to acquire support are Arcadegeddon and Necromunda: Hired Gun, while AMD will add the feature to Edge of Eternity and Resident Evil Village over the next two weeks. For the last two, AMD hasn’t offered any precise dates, although Village will get an upgrade next week and Edge of Eternity will get one this month.

FSR is now available through a variety of platforms for developers. Developers working on Unity and Unreal Engine 4 can begin experimenting with FSR in their games as early as today. The capability is now available in a special beta build of Unity, and Unreal Engine 4 developers can add support for the engine using AMD’s most recent GPUOpen patch.

AMD created a video demonstration of the performance improvements in Unity. The demo averaged 99 frames per second (fps) in 4K, according to AMD. When I set FSR to the highest quality mode (Ultra Quality), performance increased to 138 frames per second. FSR nearly quadrupled the frame rate in the most intensive Performance mode, averaging 189 frames per second.

AMD is also delivering on its promise to allow anyone to FSR, even if they aren’t working in Unity or Unreal Engine. The source code for the upscaling technology is currently accessible for free on the GPUOpen platform, allowing any developer to incorporate it into their games. We’ve already seen modders successfully patch FSR into Grand Theft Auto 5, so it’ll be intriguing to see what developers can come up with in the following months.

AMD’s FSR is the company’s response to Nvidia’s DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) technology. It’s an upscaling feature that works with both Nvidia and AMD graphics cards and can more than quadruple frame rates without compromising visual quality. AMD’s open-source method, while not as remarkable as DLSS, may entice more developers to include an upscaling function in their games.

Anno 1800, Godfall, and Terminator: Resistance are among the games that presently support the feature.
