At a ceremony held by the Government of the United Arab Emirates, the Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) was recognized by the United Nations for its work in leveraging its Hands-on Mobile ICT courses project to advance inclusive and equitable technology education in Ghana (UAE).
The United Nations Public Service Awards for 2021 have recognized ten efforts from public institutions around the world (UNPSA).
In the category of “Fostering Innovation to Deliver Inclusive and Equitable Services for Digital Transformation,” GhLA, which was founded in 1950 and is known as Ghana’s second oldest government agency established by an Act of Parliament, won.
The theme of the 2021 United Nations Public Service Awards was “Innovating the Future Public Service: New Government Models for a New Era to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.” The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and the government of the United Arab Emirates collaborated on the event (UAE).

The UNPSA is the most prestigious worldwide award for public service performance. It honors the innovative achievements and contributions of public service institutions that improve the effectiveness and responsiveness of government in countries around the world. GhLA is Ghana’s first public-sector organization to win the honor.
“Information Communication Technology (ICT) has become one of the important areas to invest in and recognizing its worth, we at Ghana Library Authority are meeting the needs of the less privileged learners by bringing digitization to their doorstep,” said Mr. Hayford Siaw, Executive Director of the Ghana Library Authority, in his remarks following the award. This award is given in recognition of the project’s great effect and success among its recipients.”
The Ghana Library Authority has been trying to foster digital literacy outside of the brick-and-mortar setting; as a result, we are not limited to the physical library space, but rather aim to connect Ghanaians to knowledge resources through all available means. One of these is Mr. Siaw’s “Hands-on Mobile ICT class.”
Dr. Helena Asamoah-Hassan, GhLA’s Board Chairperson, expressed her thanks to all stakeholders for helping GhLA achieve this level of recognition.
The United Nations honor follows a similar designation as the ‘2021 Library of the Year’ by the London Book Fair International Excellence Awards earlier this year.
