Reading Time: 2 minutes

Huawei Ghana, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization (MOCD), held a 10-day residential Artificial Intelligence (AI) training for 50 women from eight universities across Ghana.

The program, which began on Monday, September 20, 2021, and will end on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, is part of the Ministry of Communication and Digitalization’s Girls in ICT Program’s Tertiary edition, which aims to provide participants with introductory skills and knowledge in cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, cyber security, storage, big data, and the Internet of Things.

Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Honorable Minister for Communications and Digitalization, who was also the Special Guest of Honor at the inauguration ceremony and the patron of the Girls in ICT project, encouraged participants to show passion and devotion throughout the training time.

“As the inaugural event and the first for you ladies who will benefit from the project, I would like to encourage you to concentrate on the training as well as the business competition. I also hope that you will become ambassadors in the future, preaching the ICT gospel to the younger students in primary and secondary schools.”

The Minister praised Huawei for their commitment to the program and the time and effort they have put in to make it a success. According to her, the workshop is one of the modules that the MOCD is bringing to the Girls in ICT Initiative, and the Ministry hopes to make it an annual program with the help of Huawei.

Mrs. Jenny Zhou, Huawei Ghana’s Director of Public Relations, emphasized Huawei’s satisfaction in cooperating with the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization to guarantee that more women get trained in the latest ICT technologies.

Mrs. Zhou stated that, in line with Huawei’s Women In Tech and Seeds for the Future Programs this year, Huawei is looking forward to developing more local skilled ICT talent with a higher percentage of female participation as a means of contributing its quota to the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 of achieving gender equality and empowering all women.

“At Huawei, we believe that women can lead technology innovation, and that technology can ultimately empower women,” she stated.

Mr. Richard Okyere-Fosu, the Director-General of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC), stated that GIFEC has launched an ICT capacity-building initiative aimed at teachers and students in Ghana’s second cycle and basic schools.

GIFEC, he claims, has carried out these programs to create opportunities for children and women, as well as to assist them in becoming greater achievers.

Dr. Collins Yeboah Afari, the Director of the Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence, praised Huawei for its significant contribution to the program’s success. He urged the students to take the training seriously and requested Huawei’s assistance in training more women and girls in cutting-edge information and communication technology.

Students are expected to participate in Team Projects, Mentorship and Career Guidance Sessions, as well as entertaining activities such as Industrial tours and walks, as part of the program, to allow them to mingle while learning from the finest in the tech industry. This year’s edition of Huawei’s flagship CSR program, Seeds for the Future, is dedicated to women who teach STEM courses at universities.
