New job posting shows Amazon seeking a digital currency and blockchain expert

Reading Time: < 1 minute

According to a new job posting, Amazon is looking for a digital currency and blockchain product lead for its payments team. The eCommerce behemoth is looking for an “experienced product leader to develop Amazon’s Digital Currency and Blockchain strategy and product roadmap,” according to Insider. The following is the rest of the listing, which Amazon has confirmed is genuine:

You’ll use your domain experience in Blockchain, Distributed Ledger, Central Bank Digital Currencies, and Cryptocurrency to make the case for new capabilities, drive the overall vision and product strategy, and gain leadership buy-in and investment.

Although Amazon.com does not accept cryptocurrency as a form of payment, a spokeswoman told Insider that the firm was “excited by the creativity happening in the cryptocurrency area and are researching what this may look like on Amazon.”

Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s cloud division, already offers a managed blockchain service. However, when Andy Jassy was the head of Amazon’s AWS business in 2017, he claimed the company was “monitoring” the field but didn’t see “a lot of real use cases for blockchain that are much larger than using a distributed ledger,” according to ZDNet. If this recent listing is any indication, that is about to change.

With May, Apple advertised for a business development manager for “alternative payments,” with five years of experience “working in or with alternative payment providers, such as digital wallets, BNPL, Fast Payments, bitcoin, and etc.” as one of the required qualifications.
