Virgin Galactic has opened a sweepstakes offering a trip to space

Virgin Galactic just sent creator Richard Branson to the edge of space and back, and now the business is offering you the chance to travel on its spaceplane as well. Following the flight on Sunday, Branson announced that Virgin Galactic has teamed up with crowdfunding platform Omaze to launch sweepstakes that will send the winner and a friend to space.

The winner will fly aboard the VSS Unity spaceplane, the same plane on which Branson flew. Branson will also give you a tour of Spaceport America in New Mexico, “with my Willa Wonka hat on,” he stated. He quipped, “And I promise tons of chocolate in the factory.”

The competition also serves as a fundraiser for the nonprofit Space for Humanity, and the more money you donate, the more entries you’ll receive (though the fine print says that the maximum amount of entries for one person is 6,000). If you choose, you can submit an entry without giving.

According to the website, the sweepstakes ends on September 1st at 2:59 a.m. ET, and the winner will be announced “around” September 29th. To enter, you must be 18 years old or older, and the winner and their guest must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to be eligible to win the prizes.

The “experience” is estimated to take place in early 2022
